How Trauma Affects Our Thoughts and Behavior | The Think-Feel-Behave Cycle

Hey everyone! Today, let’s dive into something I talk about often in my sessions: the Think-Feel-Behave Cycle, and how trauma can impact it.

Our thoughts shape how we feel, and in turn, our feelings drive our actions. It’s a simple but powerful cycle. But here’s the thing: when we experience trauma, it can disrupt this cycle.

Trauma can cause us to develop negative thought patterns—thoughts like “I’m not safe” or “I can’t trust anyone.” These thoughts can lead to feelings of anxiety, fear, or sadness, and those feelings often drive behaviors like avoidance or lashing out.

What happens is that trauma creates a filter through which we view the world. Even small triggers can bring up past pain, making us respond in ways we don’t fully understand.

The good news? By becoming aware of these patterns, we can begin to shift them. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR are two approaches that help us reframe those negative thoughts and break the cycle of trauma.

So if you’ve been feeling stuck or overwhelmed by your thoughts and behaviors, it might be time to explore how trauma is influencing your cycle. You don’t have to do it alone—there are ways to heal and create new patterns that support your well-being.

Let me know if this resonates with you, and stay tuned for more tips on how to reset your mind and life!
